What's in a sensor

Ok - I love the digital workflow. It's easy, no smelly chemicals, no messing around in the dark fumbling for that spool you dropped. However there are some things about digital that I hate.

Here's one of them

Having worked with film since the 1960's I have cursed dust, hairs and general detritus as much as anyone. However I never, ever, remember having to clean a film before I loaded it in the camera. This is the problem now with digital sensors. They are magnets for dust, and cleaning them comes with built-in stress. Hey some of the films I use are pretty pricy, but compared with a sensor..?

Problem with this phenomenon is that  you can't just clean the sensor before an important shoot (accompanied by stress) because those danged particles will just wait until you have that perfect shot lined up before attaching themselves.

Humph

Looks like they're starting to address this issue as well, with the self cleaning models such as the new Rebel XTi.

Might help - but I don't believe in miracles. What they really need to do is make it easy to clean the sensor without the trauma and stress

The answer is simple..... Olympus DSLR. They may not be perfect, but the near-telecentric lenses (so no fringing), 4:3 format, dust protection and good handling become strangely compelling.
