Piazza San Marco

A couple of early morning scenes on the Piazza, similar but different I think.

Everything has to go like this in Venice, quite an effort when you consider all the bridges.

The Piazza doesn't wake up until well into the morning, so you can often snatch a lone figure.

I remember early one morning! Later during the day, it becomes a bit more colourful!

Peter - I guess the Venice Tourist Board will not be sending me a Christmas Card! Better post some brighter ones

I have a similar affection for lone figures. Didn't realize it till I downloaded my photos from Paris. I seem to have been particularly drawn to photographing "elderly men in Paris". I assured Peter he was not in that category...yet! :)
These two are very nice, the lady is my favorite.

I remember you standing in that corner, and I remember these lone figures crossing the square. I agree with you about the hard work it is to bring anything and everything by boat and then on foot to the city. I found it fascinating to watch, the working boats, the carts, the lifting, pushing, trailing, carrying that goes on. I wouldn't mind doing a photographic series on the working side of the city!

Hi Nathalie - I agree that the working side, or the daily life aspect of Venice is fascinating. For a tourist certain things are a just a novelty - even Acqua Alta, but what must it be like to have to incorporate them into daily live. Imagine what it is like to move house for example.

Nathalie - NB I used one of these photos on my photo blog and cropped it - for "artistic effect" of course.

Here I just left it as shot, to complement the other one

I love Venice in the early morning. There's a scene from the film Vidal's Venice of two guys sweeping the piazza San Marco with brooms made of branches the morning after Carnevale. It said it all - the party's over. A few years after I saw the movie, I had a similar experience. My friend and I were walking across the piazza the morning after Carnivale - all you could hear was the wound of our suitcase wheels clunking across. Perhaps the same two men who were in the movie were sweeping inthe piazza. The sun had just come up, cutting the gray mist of early morning. The beautiful street lights went off.

It's Ash Wednesday. Lent has begun.

Hi,
I just found your blog and I'm loving the pictures, particularly the black and white street images, I'm a fellow photographer with only 5 years experience but only have done some courses. I will add your blog to my bookmarks and try and get some tips.

Thank you
